Jewell Won't Make Rash Changes for Pompey Visit Fri 25th Feb 2011 13:32
Boss Paul Jewell says he won’t make any rash changes to his side when Portsmouth visit Portman Road on Saturday despite Tuesday’s 2-0 loss to league leaders QPR. The Town manager, who will have to make one change with Colin Healy out injured, has generally been pleased with his side’s recent performances but feels they can do better in front of goal.

Sub Jay Simpson grabbed a late point for Hull City after Jason Scotland looked to have put the Blues on their way to their third successive home league win under Paul Jewell. Town had impressed in a goalless first half but it took until the 58th for Scotland to break the deadlock with a low 20-yard shot, but with five minutes remaining Simpson looped home a back header.

Connor Wickham hit his first senior hat-trick as Town continued their resurgence under Paul Jewell with a 6-0 destruction of Doncaster at the Keepmoat Stadium, the Blues’ first ever win on Rovers turf. Sam Hird’s 25th minute own goal set the Blues on their way with Wickham subsequently netting his three, the last a penalty, and Colin Healy and Gareth McAuley one each.

Tamás Priskin netted the first goal of the Paul Jewell era but Millwall came from behind to run out 2-1 winners at the Den. Priskin’s superb finish put the Blues ahead but the home side struck back before the break via Danny Schofield and Steve Morison scored the winner 15 minutes from the end.

Rory Fallon’s first goal for Town helped the Blues to a 1-1 New Year’s Day draw at Coventry City. The New Zealander’s strike just before the break put his side in front, but Freddy Eastwood hit back straight after half-time, prior to Marlon King receiving a straight red card for a late challenge on Darren O’Dea, with the Blues unable to make the most of their advantage.

Striker Connor Wickham could be back on the bench when the Blues take on Leicester City at Portman Road on Saturday (Sky Sports Two, 5pm, KO 5.20pm). The England U21 international is one of a number of injured players close to a return to the first team, while under fire Town manager Roy Keane is waiting on defender Damien Delaney and midfielder Andros Townsend, who been suffering with a virus.

Keeper Márton Fülöp looks likely to miss Saturday’s game at Preston due to the ankle injury which forced him out of last week’s 3-1 defeat to Swansea. Better news for boss Roy Keane is that David Norris is over his sickness bug and Darren O’Dea and Mark Kennedy could both be involved at Deepdale after hamstring problems.

Scotland struck only Town’s second first half league goal of the season, then Leadbitter sealed it after the break from the spot, Danny Shittu having fouled Tamás Priskin.

Boss Roy Keane says he is weighing up what changes to make for tonight’s third round Carling Cup tie at Millwall (KO 7.45pm). The Blues manager has confirmed that keeper Brian Murphy will start, while Tamás Priskin could also come into the side with Connor Wickham and Jason Scotland perhaps dropping to the bench.

Skipper David Norris hit the post in the second half as Town continued their unbeaten start to the season with a 0-0 draw at Portsmouth. Both sides came close to netting, Darren O'Dea missing a good first half opportunity for the Blues, in a game which probably deserved to end level.
